A Majestic Louis XVI Mahogany and Brass Commode
A fine and unusual Louis XVI mahogany and brass mounted commode. The three quarters cross trellis gallery enclosing a fine marble top above three short and two long mahogany lined drawers each with delicate swag drop handles, outlined with leaf cast mouldings, flanked by blind flutes of concave brass, headed by rectangular match striker panels above guttae. The square tapering legs with moulded brass sabots. Although made of fine mahogany the appearance and colour are more of a soft satinwood (or Lemonwood as its known in France).
The use of mahogany as a drawer lining and the quality of the dovetails might indicate that this piece was the product of an English craftsman working in France during the late 18th century.
